Detectives often have little or no good clues and may not even know the identity of the victim, but usually have to go through several dead ends before finding a likely suspect. They begin to collect evidence at the crime scene and often receive a briefing from Crime Scene Officers (SOCOs) who have already conducted a preliminary investigation. You will visit the medical examiner to obtain information about the cause and time of death or the identity of the victim from dental records or fingerprints. The police also inform relatives, interview witnesses and follow the victim`s last known movements by talking to the victim`s family, friends, colleagues or known collaborators. You will visit the crime lab to obtain evidence such as fingerprints, DNA, and ballistic results. You will receive information from colleagues who have checked the criminal and financial records of victims and suspects. In some cases, psychologists or psychiatrists are called in to better understand the personality, behaviour or modus operandi of the criminal. The detectives then report to their commander, who advises or guides them on how best to proceed. For example, if suspects have been identified, the commanding officer will decide whether there are enough suspects for a search or arrest warrant, perhaps after consulting with the SCP office to see if the case is sufficiently strong; and whether the assistance of uniformed officers or armed police is required.
Investigators will then arrest the suspects, sometimes after a chase through the streets of London. The scene then moves to the interrogation room, where detectives interrogate the suspect(s) until the suspect requests a lawyer, who then arrives to advise the suspect to remain silent; then from the interrogation room to the offices of the Crown Prosecution Service, where prosecutors decide whether they have enough money to lay charges.
